Safety & Security in Boa Vista
Boa Vista Cape Verde has a population of 4500 people who live on the island and there is a strong sense of community. Everyone seems to know everyone else’s business and for this reason historically there has been very little crime against people or property amongst the native people of Boa Vista. There are also currently around 2500 non-residents at any one time on the island including those involved in the construction industry, working in the tourist industry or tourists visiting the island.
Northern European tourists visiting Boa Vista must realise they will be seen as very affluent when compared to the local population. Flashy mobile phones, digital cameras, camcorders etc. are beyond the reach of most of the islanders, although they are very aware of these items through access to the internet. If sufficient temptation is put in front of people they will react to it, so it makes sense not to openly display valuable items.
On a personal note we have always found the local people to be very polite, friendly and helpful if you are willing to engage with them.
The island is about to undergo a significant transformation in the next few years with 30,000 hotel beds projected and numerous private residences being built. Add to this the number of additional workers who will be living on the island in the construction industry and to service the hotels and you will see that the islands current inhabitants will be outnumbered by around 6 to 1 by this influx of people. It is not certain what this will mean for the islands population but such a massive change is bound to bring with it additional problems including petty crime, since there will be more opportunity and more people able to take advantage of it.
