The airport is very basic by European standards but does have a café, bank, ice cream kiosk and booking offices for the local airline TACV. The airport is situated close to the town of Rabil and is about 5km south of the main town of Sal Rei. All the major hotels will arrange transfers for their guests and you will be met at the airport. For those travelling independently there is usually an army of aluguer (private taxis) drivers waiting to meet each international flight, expect to pay around 700cve for the journey to Sal Rei, however with the increase in international flights these prices will probably rise to 1000cve (10 euros). Please remember to use the ATM at the airport to draw Cape Verde Escudo’s or you will end up overpaying in euros (see section on money). You will need to have at least 25 euros for each person in cash with you when you land to pay for an entry visa (see section on visas).
Boa Vista International Airport opened in October 2007. Initially the international flight program was sporadic with the only regular flights being from Malpensa and Verona in Italy and initially a stopover flight service from London Gatwick. By November 2008 the airport will be served by flights from many Northern European Airports including London Gatwick, Frankfurt, Hanover, Dusseldorf, Munich and Lisbon as well as the original Italian flights. There are also plans for a direct flight form Manchester in May 2009
The direct flights from the UK are with Thomsonfly and depart from and return to Gatwick on a Friday. Direct flight times from the UK are just under 6 hours each way.
Boa Vista airport is also served by two local airlines, TACV and Halcyon Air, which provide island hopping flights. For details of the time tables visit the forum. The main airports in Cape Verde are Sal (SID) and Praia (RAI) from where you can get interconnecting flights to the rest of the Cape Verde Islands.
Booking Internal Flights
It is advisable to book internal flights through the local airlines. It is possible to book these in advance in the UK before you travel and there are a number of UK agents who can do this for you, but you will be charged a big mark up on the flight prices. It is now possible (July 2009) to book Halcyon air tickets on their website it may also be possible in future to book in advance on the TACV website but this is currently still under construction. It is possible to book flights at Boa Vista airport through the TACV office. Alternatively there are a number of agencies in Sal Rei that can book flights including Morena Tours (Map ref: 17), Barracuda Tours (Map ref: 73) and there is a local CV travel office in the Polivalente (Map ref: 61). Internal flights tend to fill quickly so it is advisable to book several days before you intend to travel, there are also frequent cancellations, please use the useful telephone numbers below.
Please be aware that all timetables published here are subject to change, every effort will be made to keep this website up to date but please check with your carrier before flying. Alternatively look for updates on the Boa Vista Experience forum.
